At approx 19:00 yesterday (1st Decemeber 2005) I was made aware that all sites hosted on the Quizzical server were down and had been replaced with an account suspension message.

The situation was rectified at 14:30 today - an approximate total of 20.5 hours downtime across the board.

The reason for the outage was a combination of a failed debit card transaction and the marking as spam of the notification emails meaning I was unaware that the account was about to be suspended. As soon as I realised there was a problem I immediately contacted tech support who confirmed the cause and reactivated the account.

I can only apologise for the inconvenience and any loss of business that may have resulted from the downtime. If you are a paying customer and have good reason to believe that you did lose business as a result of the problem then please contact me to discuss compensation via a reduction in hosting fees for next year.

I have since made sure that the emails from the server notification system are routed directly to multiple accounts to avoid any repeat of this issue.

Just to let you know there is 2-4 hours of planned downtime on the server tonight to work on the SCSI controller and hard disks.

Our monitoring systems have detected a potential hardware issue affecting the SCSI system on the jupiter.diyhost.co.uk webserver.

To investigate this urgent matter, we will need to take “Jupiter” out of operation for a maximum of 4 hours - however, we do expect the diagnostics etc to be complete within 2 hours. This maintenance window is planned to commence at 7pm UK time (BST) [6pm UTC/GMT] on Thursday the 14th of July 2005.

Web sites, control panels and email will be unavailable during this period. Emails sent to the server will be queued at the senders email server for redelivery upon system restore.

We apologise for the short notification time available, but as a failure of the SCSI controller or hard drives could result in possible data loss - we feel it is best to investigate this issue as quickly as possible.

The issues with Perl Modules and server 500 errors has been fixed.

If you are still experiencing problems then please let me know!

Those of you running MT2.6 may have been experiencing a spate of Server Error (500) problems. This was due to a bug in a new version of the DB::MYSQL module that was rolled out by CPanel.

The module has since been updated and should be rolled out shortly.
